Arvada, CO - The Mullen Mustang JV team put their best effort in a 1 to 0 loss to the Littleton Hawks early Saturday evening in their CDCC semi-final playoff at the Apex Center. The games only goal was a power play goal given up late into the 2nd period.
The game was a well-coached and tightly played game by both teams. There were no penalties in both the first and third periods. Mullen goalie Jake McCarville made 21 solid saves from 22 shots and Mullen had 20 shots against the Littleton netminder. It was a game that could have easily been won by Mullen had the puck bounce in the Mustang's favor.
Arvada, CO - The Mullen High Mustang JV hockey team advanced into the league semi-finals with a 5 to 3 victory over the Arapahoe Warriors at the neutral Apex Center. The game was full of excitement and momentum swings as the Mustangs prevailed in the end to beat the Warriors for the first time during the 2010/2011 hockey season.
Nearly the first 10 minutes of the games were played scoreless. However it was clear early on that Mullen had been well prepared for the game and came out to win and ignore and post-whistle invitations to visit the penalty box. Jack Halbrook started the scoring for Mullen in the first period with a power play goal assisted by Joe Schultz. Jack's goal was one of two goals from face-offs for the Mustangs. About two minutes later Sean Whitfield scored for the Mustangs with a deflected snap-shot with 3:27 remaining in the first period (assited by Ryan Cope). Mullen went into the 2nd period with a two goal lead.
The 2nd period yielded the most goals of the game as the Warriors pulled even by scoring twice at 5:27 and 11:57. The remaining part of the 2nd period was wide-open end to end play and Adam George scored the first of his two goals at 13:39 assisted by Jack Halbrook and Joe Schultz. Adam's goal was the culmination of a great break-out and setup passing. The Warriors scored with .19 seconds remaining in the period to even the game 3 to 3.
The Mustangs scored twice in the 3rd period with goals with the game winning goal off another face-off by Adam George (assisted by Wes Wicks) and another goal by Ryan Cope (assisted by Chris Schwappach) that was the pinnacle of hard work as the Warriors struggled to stay out of the penalty box during the period. The effort, team-work, discipline, and composure exhibited by the Mullen High Mustang Hockey team clearly showed they were the better team on the ice.
